Ursula Holden Gill Joins us on Friday 3 May 2019
Ursula Holden Gill returns to Matlock Storytelling Cafe on Friday 3rd May with The Bishoprick Garland (or to give it its full title: ‘The Bishoprick Garland or a Collection of Legends, Songs and Ballads Belonging to the County of Durham’). This was a book which was compiled by Cuthbert Sharp in 1834. It features historical details of people, places, songs, poems and writers pertaining to the North East of England and in particular The Bishoprick of Durham. In 2018, Hartlepool Folk Festival commissioned Ursula to adapt some of the stories from the garland so that they might translate to modern audiences and along with a selection of beautifully arranged songs and ballads be celebrated as part of the North East’s traditional folk heritage for many years to come. Ursula enjoyed this process so much that she has since decided to share them with everyone!
We will also have the home grown talent of Gill Shimwell and a healthy smattering of other tellers and tales to provide a rich and rounded evening of storytelling.
Matlock Storytelling Cafe is a unique night out in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales. The candlelit tables foster a warm welcoming atmosphere. Soup, hot drinks and great cakes are available and you can bring your own booze, it is Friday night after all. Tickets are just £7
